Definition

Cookies are strings of text made up of portions of code sent from one web server (e.g. the website) to an Internet browser and installed inside it. More specifically, they are small text files that the websites users visit send to their terminals, where they are stored to then be sent back to the same websites on subsequent visits. Almost all browsers are set so that cookies are automatically filed on the User’s terminal.

Cookies are used for different and various purposes. They have different peculiarities and can be used both by Praesidium International and by third parties. The websites of Praesidium International use or can use – also combined with each other – the following categories of cookies, divided up based on the classification proposed in Opinion 04/2012 on Cookie Consent Exemption issued by the Working Party pursuant to Art. 29 of Directive 95/46/EC (found here):

  • Session or persistent cookies
  • Technical and profiling cookies
  • First party and third party cookies

Session or persistent cookies

Cookies can expire at the end of a browser session (the period elapsing between when the User opens a browser window and closes it) or can be kept for a longer time span. Session cookies are those that allow websites to tie together user’s actions during a browser session. Session cookies expire when the browser session ends. Persistent cookies are stored on a user’s device between browser sessions for varying periods of time, and allow the User’s preferences of actions concerning a website to be stored.

Technical and Profiling Cookies

Technical cookies are those that the website owner uses solely to transmit a communication over an electronic communication network, or to the extent strictly necessary for the supplier of an information company service that the subscriber or User explicitly requests to supply said service. Prior User consent is not required to install these cookies if they are used directly by the website operator.

Profiling Cookies are aimed at creating User profiles and are used to send advertising messages matching the preferences the User shows while browsing the web. Owing to the particular invasiveness that these Cookies may have in the Users’ privacy, European legislation requires that the User must be adequately informed on their use by way of a brief notice (banner) and an extended report on the website, and that Users have to give their express consent on the matter the first time they visit the website. Said consent may be given in a general way by interacting with the short notice banner on the landing page of the website, with the methods indicated in the banner, or may be given or denied selectively according to the methods explained below. Track of this consent is kept when subsequent visits are made. However, the User always has the possibility to fully or partly revoke the consent previously given.

First party and third party cookies

A Cookie is a first party cookie or third party cookie, depending on the website or domain from which it comes.

Basically speaking, first party cookies are cookies set and/or managed by the website owner. For these Cookies, the obligation to provide information, acquire consent and/or permit possible blockage of the Cookies lies with the website owner.

Third party Cookies are Cookies set by a domain other than the one the User visits. For these Cookies, the obligation to provide information and instructions on how to give consent and/or block the Cookies lies with the third party, while the website owner is required only to include in the website the link to the third party’s website where these elements are available.

First Party Cookies

The Cookies that Praesidium International uses in the Web Space are the technical and profiling types.

The technical cookies can be divided into the following subcategories:

  • functional cookies, also of third parties, used to activate specific functions of this Web Space and necessary to supply the service or improve it.

As specified in the previous paragraph, since they are technical these Cookies require no prior consent of the User in order to be installed and used.

The profiling cookies that Praesidium International uses have profiling and communication purposes for marketing, in various advertising forms, and are customised based on the User’s interests and behaviour on the web.
