BENIN – Oil Tanker Attacked 44NM S of Cotonou (Benin) – March 5th, 2020

A GREECE-FLAGGED OIL TANKER WAS ATTACKED SOUTH OF COTONOU WITHIN THE BENIN EEZ. PIRATES ALLEGEDLY MANAGED TO BOARD THE VESSEL

BENIN // The Greek tanker MINERVA VIRGO was reported under attack around 1400 LT on March 5th, approximately 44NM South of Cotonou, Benin. The erratic course of the vessel is an indicator that confirm the reports who state that some perpetrators may have managed to board the vessel. A Benin Navy vessel is reportedly underway to the area of the incident.

Earlier during the day, some 50NM WSW of the above-mentioned attack position, another tanker reported a suspicious approach which could possibly have involved the same PAG.

The Beninese EEZ and its surroundings have been interested by substantial PAG activity over the last year with the latest reported attack occurred on February 20th against the Liberia-flagged crude oil tanker ALPINE PENELOPE which resulted in the kidnapping of 9 crewmembers.
