NIGERIA – Nigerian Navy Arrests 11 Suspected Pirates in Lagos

NIGERIAN NAVY PERSONNEL SEIZED A VESSEL ALLEGEDLY USED FOR CONDUCTING OIL THEFTS AND ARRESTED 11 SUSPECTS

Eleven persons suspected to be pirates were at the weekend arrested by naval operatives attached to the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, in Lagos. The naval operatives also arrested a logistics vessel, MV TIM GBEGELE, allegedly used by the pirates to steal petroleum products.

It was learnt that at the time of the arrest, the ship was found to be laden with about 369 metric tons of AGO and had no valid approval for the product. This is even as authority in charge of NNS BEECROFT said it also recovered petroleum product stolen from ruptured pipes belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) at Atlas Cove.

The fresh recovery was made barely one month after a similar interception was made. Though the names of the suspected sea robbers were not known as at press time, they were said to have sneaked into Lagos waters pretending to be carrying out logistics work.
