BENIN – Oil Tanker Attacked 75NM SSW of Cotonou (Benin) – February 20th, 2020

AN OIL TANKER WAS ATTACKED SSW OF COTONOU WITHIN THE BENIN EEZ. PIRATES ALLEGEDLY MANAGED TO BOARD THE VESSEL

GULF OF GUINEA // An oil tanker was attacked while underway approximately 75NM SSW of Cotonou in the early hours of February 20th. According to initial reports, perpetrators managed to board the vessel and a distress call was immediately launched before contact was lost with the ship.

The Benin EEZ and its surroundings have been interested by piracy activity in the last year with the latest attack reported on January 19th against a container vessel.

All vessels sailing in broader area are advised to implement additional lookout, especially during nighttime even in areas outside the Nigerian EEZ/JWC.
